Below are a few guidelines to follow if you are intending to hire a car:

• To hire a car in Ireland you must hold a valid driving licence
• In Ireland driving is on the left side of the road and seat belts must be worn at all times in the front and back seat of the vehicle
• Until the age of 2 years babies must be harnessed in car seats and they should be secured in a rear-facing position.  A booster car seat should be used for children up to the age of eight years
•  Laws on drink driving are very strict and anyone caught driving under the influence of drink and contravening the law will be penalised
• Speed limits vary in the Republic of Ireland. In a built-up urban area the speed limit is 50kph/30mph, 80kph/50mph on single non-national open roads, on national roads 100kph/60mph and on the motorway the speed limit is 120kph
• In Northern Ireland the speed limits in a built-up urban area is 30mph/50kph, on a single carriageway it is  60mph/96kph and ondual carriageways or motorways the speed limit is 70mph/112kph
